Cal Hypo Tablets 101

iStock-182174385.jpgAs a pool operator, you’re familiar with the various chlorination system products on the market. And among those many options, one of the most common and effective forms of chlorination are calcium hypochlorite (cal hypo) tablets.

When properly used, cal hypo tablets release healthy amounts of chlorine into pool water to stop the spread of harmful bacteria that can cause health problems such as diarrhea, swimmer’s ear and respiratory and skin conditions, providing a more enjoyable experience for swimmers.

While there are many distributors, a good cal hypo tablet should be able to erode reliably, consistently and predictably and should be of a quality that prevents softening and clogging of chlorination systems.

In general, cal hypo tabs are 1 ¼ inches thick and are composed entirely of calcium hypochlorite. Cal hypo tabs work in tandem with chlorinators to efficiently dispense chemicals into the pool and leave a residual level that continues to protect swimmers long after the tab was initially applied. Due to the “chlorinate over time” nature of cal hypo tablets, they tend to be the safest choice for maintaining a balanced pH within pools and are extremely easy to manage effectively. However, it is equally important to handle both cal hypo tablets and chlorinator systems with care to avoid malfunctions that could potentially affect pH levels and the chlorination systems themselves. Here are some things to keep track of when dealing with cal hypo tablets:

  • Use cal hypo tablets that resist breakage. Low quality cal hypo tablets can potentially break and clog chlorinator systems, resulting in broken systems and compromised pool chemistry.
  • Compatibility matters. Cal hypo tablets and chlorinators aren’t always compatible and failure to use cooperative components can result in compromised pool chemistry.
  • Use appropriate protective gear. When handling cal hypo tablets, always wear protective eyewear and gloves.

What to Look For
With proper treatment, cal hypo tablets will leave your pool in pristine condition:

  • A clean pool should be crystal clear and blue, while the painted lines at the bottom of the pool should be clearly visible.
  • Pool tiles should be smooth to the touch, as slippery or sticky tiles are likely the result of algae or other malignant organism build up.
  • Any strong smells should be noted, as properly applied chemicals should not give off any odor.
  • Make sure that all pumps and filters are running correctly, as improper application of cal hypo tablets can have negative side effects.

With the proper use of cal hypo tablets and a vigilant eye for chlorination levels in your facility, your water quality will have no peers. Accu-Tab® cal hypo tablets are renowned for all of these qualities, with the reliability and consistency that comes with a multi-step manufacturing and quality control process.
